I recently took six weeks to travel to New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa, both to see friends from my time living abroad years ago, and also to explore new areas. My last week was spent in Cape Town, visiting a friend there who is an artist, and who has a studio in the city neighborhood of Woodstock, an established artists' community filled with studio and design spaces, interesting shops, and beautiful street art. Juma Mkwela, a friend of my host's, and who is both an artist and social activist, gave me a walking tour of the area, explaining various pieces and discussing the value of street art in the community. Woodstock is a visually and socially rich place to visit, and I encourage anyone who is able to visit Cape Town to see this part of the city.
