Climate ‘Change’ — Why World Leaders Are Putting A Price Tag On Our Planet

James Leach

“Our Economy is more important than Global warming”. This same line is being used around the world by leaders of developed and developing nations alike. They are hell bent on the idea that the economy must be protected at all costs even if that cost is our entire planet. We as a society must stop having tunnel vision when it comes to issues that concern the economy and open our eye so we can see what’s really important.

It is the greatest downfall of democracy that leaders only serve short terms, and that during that time the only thing they think about is how to get themselves or their party reelected. This unfortunately discourages long-term thinking, and climate change is a long-term problem. No politician is going to commit to cutting green house gases if it means cutting jobs. No politician is going to slow down it emissions if it means slowing down industry. Why you ask, because that would be unpopular and we the general public would vote them out. That is why that we as a society must come to terms with the fact that climate change is going to cost us a lot.

Climate change will cost us money. There is no way around it. Climate change is a reality and its here and now. We have two very simple choices. Do we pay for climate change now, on our own terms, when we can control the extent of the damage or do we wait and pay for it later, when it is out of our control and we have to just sit back and watch as mother earth takes her revenge? Some jobs will be lost, our Economy will be hit hard and our back pockets will become somewhat lighter. These are unfortunately necessary evils if we are going to save our planet. If we don’t make these sacrifices now, than they and much worse will be forced upon us in the not so far future.

If we as a society can come to terms with this reality than our Politicians will soon follow suit. Only then will we be able to move forward and start looking for a real, long lasting and practical solution. Climate change is a lose/lose situation; there is no easy way out. But we must act now before the situation becomes far worse.
